Welcome to Allen Bourne Images, where the world of nature, man-made and abstract come together as photographic art. This space is where I share my passion for photography and showcase current portfolios of my images

If I had a motto, it would be “Always Looking.” The world is full of interesting things, you just have to keep an eye out for them, and in my case that pretty much means one eye as I lost half the vision in my right one (my “camera eye”) back in 2009.  While I had to shift to shooting only with my left eye, my brain has pretty much adapted well and today I things pretty much as they are. Still, I have to compliment others as far back as my fourth and sixth grade art teachers for opening eyes to the world of fine art, my photography instructors/mentors past and present on how to use a camera, the incredibly talented co-workers in the advertising and marketing firms of my career for helping me develop “an eye” for all things artistic, and photography salon members over time who have given me their honest opinions about my work.

Artist Statement

In his “law of the instrument,” Abraham Maslow said, "I suppose it is tempting, if the only tool you have is a hammer, to treat everything as if it were a nail."  This law certainly applies to photographers who, like me, shoot a wide range of subjects on the way to finding their artistic voice.

While much art on the market today seems aimed at driving social awareness or change on often narrow topics, my purpose is to provide a visual haven from the hyper-politicized environment that we live in today, a haven that delights in presenting the world that I see, whether it be abstract or representative, color or monochrome. My predominant interests are in the abstract in nature, or in objects discarded or off the beaten path that have been etched by the chemistry of our environment. However, I find great pleasure in creating monochrome versions of certain landscapes that lend themselves to the power of that form.

Biography

I received a Bachelor of Science degree from Oklahoma State University in Journalism/Advertising, which included courses in photography.  His interest in the medium led to a news photography internship and a 35-year career in communications that included strategic work in graphic design studios, magazines, advertising agencies and corporate marketing departments. A chance purchase of an Eliot Porter portfolio in 1980 stimulated my interest in abstract photography, particularly of the natural environment, and has fueled an ongoing informal study of abstract and color field painting, which influences my print and video work today.
